How I work

Fixed fees agreed up front, written outputs you can use, and a clear line between commercial advice and legal advice.

Engagements

Projects. A defined piece of work, such as a contract review, a tender response or a negotiation, for a fixed fee agreed before I start.

Fractional commercial manager. A set number of hours each month for businesses with a steady flow of contracts or tenders. Costs less than a full-time hire for the hours you actually need, and you get someone who has done the job at enterprise scale.

I quote after the first call, once I understand the scope. If the budget is tight, we narrow the scope rather than cut corners.

Working remotely

I work with Australian clients remotely: documents, video calls and a shared folder. Calls are scheduled in your afternoon, Australian eastern time. Written work you send at the end of your day is often back by the next morning.

For negotiations or meetings where being in the room matters, we'll plan it into the engagement.

Commercial advice, not legal advice

I'm not a lawyer and I don't give legal advice. I do draft: scopes, pricing schedules, service levels, change processes, and proposed wording for the clauses we want changed. That wording is a commercial proposal, not legal advice, and I recommend your own lawyer reviews it before you rely on it or sign. Reviewing a draft that already reflects the deal takes them far less time than drafting from scratch, which is where the saving comes from.

Conflicts of interest

I work for suppliers and for buyers. Before I accept any engagement, I check it won't put me across the table from an existing client, or advising a bidder on a tender I've helped a buyer prepare. If it would, I decline.

Confidentiality

Happy to sign your NDA before you send documents. My engagement terms include confidentiality as standard. Read my standard terms.

Three ways to cover commercial work

Which one fits depends on how much contract and tender work you have, and how often.

Hiring a contract managerA large advisory firmWorking with me
What you commit toA permanent salary and on-costsAn engagement scoped and priced by the firmOne project at a fixed fee, or a set number of hours each month
Who does the workOne person, at the level you can recruitA team, with seniority varying by engagementMe, from the first call to the final document
Time to startWeeks to months of recruitmentA proposal and engagement processAfter a first call and a signed Engagement Schedule
Best fitA steady, full-time volume of contractsLarge, multi-disciplinary programmesSignificant contracts and tenders without full-time volume

I take on a small number of engagements at a time, so the person you speak to is the person who does the work. If I can't start when you need me to, I'll tell you on the first call.
